Who we are
Where to Next is made by Ethan Simister, trading as Simister Labs, a sole trader in the United Kingdom. We are the controller of your personal data under UK data protection law. Contact: simisterlabs@gmail.com.
What we collect and why
| Data | Why | Kept for |
|---|---|---|
| Your chosen name, and a profile photo if you add one | Your account, and showing you to friends and crews | Until you delete your account |
| Your precise location, only while the app is open | Finding bars near you, confirming you are at a bar, your way home. We do not track you in the background. | Not stored as a trail. A visit to a bar is stored (below). |
| Your home location | Planning your way home. It is saved on your phone and sent only with a way-home request. Our server does not store or log it against you. If you set it by typing a postcode or place, that search is cached without your name (see below). | On your phone until you change or delete it |
| Bars you visit, and drinks you log (with prices if you enter them) | Your night history, crews, and leaderboards if you opt in | 400 days |
| Sober test results (reaction times) | Showing you your own results | 30 days |
| Friends, crews, votes, reports and blocks | The social features and keeping people safe | Until you delete your account. Reports are kept until they are dealt with, then for up to a year. |
| Feedback you send | Improving the app | 180 days |
| App activity (which features are used, errors) | Keeping the app working | 90 days |
| Your IP address | Stopping abuse of sign-up and requests | 2 days (up to 14 days in backups) |
| Bar tags, bars you hide, last-orders times and achievements | Your settings and the features you use | Until you delete your account |
| You can clear your history at any time from your profile. | ||
Our legal bases are: providing the service you asked for (contract), and our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure and free of abuse.
Who else sees it
We do not sell your data and there are no adverts. To find bars, our server sends a location (never your name) to Google Places. If you search for a place or postcode, the search text goes to postcodes.io or OpenStreetMap's Nominatim, and we keep the result for up to 30 days (not who searched) so the same search is faster next time. Other people using the app see your name and photo only where you choose to appear: friends, crews, leaderboards you have not opted out of, and the nearby list if you switch it on (it is off by default for new accounts).
Where it is stored
On servers we rent in London, United Kingdom. Nightly backups are kept for 14 days, also in London.
Deleting your account
In the app: Settings, Delete my account. It is immediate. Or use the deletion request form, and we will delete it within 30 days. After deletion your data leaves our backups within 14 days.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it: email simisterlabs@gmail.com. If you are unhappy with our answer you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Age
Where to Next is for people aged 18 or over.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes, and important changes are shown in the app.
